Streptococcus: serological classification

on 23.9.08 with 0 comments

  • how to classify? acid-hydrolyze the cell wall and add in antibodies against specific antigens

  • then, link these antibodies to latex and look at the clustering of the beads

  • group B antigen represents only two species; other groups have many species. some species can express different groups of antigens

  • group C, F, G are less virulent than group A Strep, but you get the same diseases

  • group D is now known as Enterococcus; Pneumococcus was never known as Strep
