  • host must use complement and antibodies to initiate opsonization and phagocytosis

  • Strep has many defense mechanisms against this

  • degrade chemokines to prevent neutrophil recruitment

  • interfere with complement deposition

  • exhibit proteins that bind Fc portions of antibodies, much like Staph’s protein A

  • also escape nets that are thrown out neutrophils by virtue of Strep producing a DNAase
