  • α-hemolysis causes greening of agar

    • viridansStrep. because plates look greenish

    • oral flora, tooth decay, plaque

    • abscesses

  • β-hemolysis causes complete red blood cell lysis

    • groups A, B, C, F, G

    • result of a powerful exotoxin

  • γ-hemolysis represents no lysis of RBC

  • Enterococcus can produce any of these phenotypes, but most commonly, γ and α are seen
