α-hemolysis causes greening of agar
“viridans” Strep. because plates look greenish
oral flora, tooth decay, plaque
abscesses
β-hemolysis causes complete red blood cell lysis
groups A, B, C, F, G
result of a powerful exotoxin
γ-hemolysis represents no lysis of RBC
Enterococcus can produce any of these phenotypes, but most commonly, γ and α are seen
