why it works: cell envelope of Mycobacterium is unique because it has a certain type of acid
it takes a bunch of chemicals to induce a reaction; this is the acid-fast stain
Nocardia: modified acid-fast test yields a positive result
because it has a lot of lipids, it stains poorly with Gram stain, looking like a branching, poorly-staining Gram-positive organism
it causes brain and pulmonary abscesses
modified acid-fast test with gentler acid decolorizer leads to characteristic picture
