  • pharyngitis = “strep throat”

  • usually self-limited

  • but, can produce paratonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess

  • toxin-mediated disease: scarlet fever, with sandpapery rash and scarlet tongue

  • impetigo

  • deeper skin infections: cellulitis or erysipelis

  • adenitis

  • bone/joint infection

  • pneumonia/empyema

  • postinfectious immunologic diseases: glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever

  • necrotizing fasciitis, “flesh-eating virus”: photo of necrotizing fasciitis in primary varicella

  • toxic shock syndrome

  • M1, M3, M28 are the cause of most basic infections
