pharyngitis = “strep throat”
usually self-limited
but, can produce paratonsillar or retropharyngeal abscess
toxin-mediated disease: scarlet fever, with sandpapery rash and scarlet tongue
impetigo
deeper skin infections: cellulitis or erysipelis
adenitis
bone/joint infection
pneumonia/empyema
postinfectious immunologic diseases: glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever
necrotizing fasciitis, “flesh-eating virus”: photo of necrotizing fasciitis in primary varicella
toxic shock syndrome
