Group A Streptococci: M surface protein

on 23.9.08 with 0 comments

  • M-protein structure was solved at UCSD

  • molecule is anchored to cell wall at its C terminus

  • homology leads to cross-reactivity associated with autoimmune disease

  • N terminus, farthest away from bacteria, is highly variable. this is the basis for the large variety of Group A Streptococci serotypes

cross-protection is not very strong: protection against one serotype does not guarantee protection against other serotypes
