M-protein structure was solved at UCSD
molecule is anchored to cell wall at its C terminus
homology leads to cross-reactivity associated with autoimmune disease
N terminus, farthest away from bacteria, is highly variable. this is the basis for the large variety of Group A Streptococci serotypes
cross-protection is not very strong: protection against one serotype does not guarantee protection against other serotypes
