Iron acquisition mechanisms

on 7.9.08 with 0 comments

  • production of siderophores, which are low-MW compounds that chelate iron and compete with iron-binding proteins produced by the host

    • bacteria have special transport mechanisms to take up these Fe-bound siderophores back up into the bacteria

    • in case 3, this is the mechanism that E. coli uses to get iron from the host

  • direct uptake of iron from bound transferrin/lactoferrin

    • this is what Neisseria uses

    • these organisms grow on mucosal surfaces. lactoferrin is the main Fe-binding protein on mucosal surfaces

  • use of heme from tissue breakdown
