medically-important bacteria acquire energy through two different processes:
fermentation
does not require oxygen or any other terminal electronic receptor
it is not a net oxidation-reduction reaction
respiration
requires electron transport and a terminal electron acceptor such as oxygen
for humans, oxygen is the only terminal electron acceptor
some bacteria can use other terminal electron acceptors
the key concept is that bacteria can use electron transport
