Bacterial growth requirements: energy source

on 7.9.08 with 0 comments

  • medically-important bacteria acquire energy through two different processes:

  • fermentation

    • does not require oxygen or any other terminal electronic receptor

    • it is not a net oxidation-reduction reaction

  • respiration

    • requires electron transport and a terminal electron acceptor such as oxygen

    • for humans, oxygen is the only terminal electron acceptor

    • some bacteria can use other terminal electron acceptors

    • the key concept is that bacteria can use electron transport
