Bacterial growth requirements: nutrients, particularly iron

on 7.9.08 with 0 comments

  • some bacteria have simple requirements (electrolytes, iron)

  • others have complex requirements

  • the host tries to control the accessibility of iron to pathogens

  • all pathogenic microbes require iron for growth. the host tries to restrict access to some essential nutrients, particularly iron, by regulating Fe-binding proteins

    • lactoferrin

    • transferrin

    • hemoglobin

    • etc.

  • there is little free iron available for organisms to use during the infection process

  • therefore, bacterial pathogens have special iron acquisition mechanisms that allow them to compete with the host for the availability of iron
