some bacteria have simple requirements (electrolytes, iron)
others have complex requirements
the host tries to control the accessibility of iron to pathogens
all pathogenic microbes require iron for growth. the host tries to restrict access to some essential nutrients, particularly iron, by regulating Fe-binding proteins
lactoferrin
transferrin
hemoglobin
etc.
there is little free iron available for organisms to use during the infection process
therefore, bacterial pathogens have special iron acquisition mechanisms that allow them to compete with the host for the availability of iron
