Streptococci form chains, not clusters
they divide in the same direction all the time, leading to chains
Strep are facultative or strict anaerobes
they tolerate aerobic conditions (live in throat, skin), but prefer anaerobic metabolism and grow better under such situations
to culture most effectively, let Strep sit in a tube with a lid on the tube
