  • everyone has dyspnea; short, forced expiration; barrel chest

  • two types of patients

    • pink puffers

      • oxygenation is not impaired

    • blue bloaters

      • oxygenation is impaired

      • associated with chronic bronchitis

  • airway obstruction is indicated by decreased expiratory flow rate; this can be measured by FEV1 (forced expiratory volume over the first second), which decreases. this is due to loss of elastic recoil
