everyone has dyspnea; short, forced expiration; barrel chest
two types of patients
pink puffers
oxygenation is not impaired
blue bloaters
oxygenation is impaired
associated with chronic bronchitis
airway obstruction is indicated by decreased expiratory flow rate; this can be measured by FEV1 (forced expiratory volume over the first second), which decreases. this is due to loss of elastic recoil
