One of the ways that the body terminates the actions of norepinephrine and sympathetic activity is via breakdown by COMT. If a Parkinson’s patient is taking some medication (such as Sinemet, which is a brand name drug containing levodopa, a catecholamine, the drug of choice in Parkinson’s disease) that is metabolized by COMT, COMT inhibitors (such as Tasmar or COMTan) are commonly prescribed to increase the length of time that the levodopa is effective. So COMT inhibitors are not used alone to handle Parkinson’s disease, but in conjunction with levodopa, as an adjunct.
