Antiepileptic & Antiseizure drugs

Valproic Acid

  • Antiepileptic

  • Can Produce Liver problems

  • Associated with prolonged bleeding

Falbutol (Falamate)


  • Aplastic anemia, and severe hepatitis

Gabapentin

  • Anticonvulsant / Antiseizure (epilepsy)

  • GABA mimetic

  • Indicated in Tx of Neuropathic pain such as postherpatic and diabetic neuropathy


Phenytoin(dilantin)

  • lowers neuronal firing

  • antiarrhythmic

  • lowers cellular Na+ influx

  • Gingival hyperplasia

Carbemazopine (Tegretol)

  • Agent of choice in Tx of trigeminal neuralgia

  • Must monitor blood due to risk of Leukopenia, and agranulocytosis

Baclofen

  • GABA-B agonist

  • Antispasmotic


Phenobarbitol

  • For tx of Grand Mal seizure

  • Anticonvulsant and for Tx of trigeminal neuralgia

  • Inactivated by oxidation

  • Problems similar to all barbiturates.

  • Sedation and abuse

  • Induces P450**
