Mononeuritis (for example, facial paralysis) can occur at any stage of the HIV infection. Polyneuritis (often with severe pain and sensory disorders) in persons who are not taking any medication occurs almost exclusively in an advanced stage of the disease. Severe radiculitis with nerve pain can be caused by cytomegalovirus infection. Antiretroviral therapy, in particular Hivid®, Zerit® and Videx®, can cause neuritis.
