pericardial space normally holds about 25 ml of serious fluid
as little as 100 ml, if it accumulates quickly, can do you in
if it chronically accumulates, you might even hold up to 1 liter before significant mortality
it’s not the volume but rather the rate of accumulation that is responsible for development of acute, life-threatening conditions
Causes of tamponade
hemopericardium
this is what kills people in car accidents—rip aorta, aorta bleeds retrograde
or, atherogenic
neoplasm: rapid accumulation of fluid
radiation therapy, infections, drug reactions (procainamide, hydralazine)
