if you have rapid accumulation, 100 cc is all you need for cardiac tamponade
if you have slow accumulation, large volumes of effusion might be tolerated
Echo in pericardial effusion
this is the procedure of choice for the diagnosis
Ultrasound
chambers are seen
effusion is surrounding the heart
more pericardial effusion
You gotta watch out for the catastrophes
drain if you have suspicion of tamponade or suspicion of infection
usually drain a little bit for testing if you are worried about malignancy or infection
fluid due to heart failure, radiation therapy will be just transudate, not exudate or blood
cardiac silhouette shrinks down after steroid administration
