  • if you have rapid accumulation, 100 cc is all you need for cardiac tamponade

  • if you have slow accumulation, large volumes of effusion might be tolerated


Echo in pericardial effusion

  • this is the procedure of choice for the diagnosis


Ultrasound

  • chambers are seen

  • effusion is surrounding the heart

  • more pericardial effusion


You gotta watch out for the catastrophes

  • drain if you have suspicion of tamponade or suspicion of infection

  • usually drain a little bit for testing if you are worried about malignancy or infection

  • fluid due to heart failure, radiation therapy will be just transudate, not exudate or blood
