Toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1)

  • it is a superantigen, which is a molecule that facilitates the interaction of APCs with T cells

  • instead of this being an antigen-specific interaction (where processed MHC particle is presented on MHC and this is presented to TH cell), superantigen mediates a nonspecific interaction between any T cell and any APC

  • this leads to clonal expansion of any T cell that the superantigen helps activate

  • this leads to the production of a variety of cytokines and, ultimately, shock

Superantigens of Staph. aureus

  • Staphylococcal enterotoxins are associated with food poisoning too
