it is a superantigen, which is a molecule that facilitates the interaction of APCs with T cells
instead of this being an antigen-specific interaction (where processed MHC particle is presented on MHC and this is presented to TH cell), superantigen mediates a nonspecific interaction between any T cell and any APC
this leads to clonal expansion of any T cell that the superantigen helps activate
this leads to the production of a variety of cytokines and, ultimately, shock
