Phagocytosis
phagosome fuses with lysosome that contains enzymes
this forms a phagolysosome
bacteria is killed
residue is released by exocytosis
Oxygen-independent microbial killing
mediated by a variety of factors
Oxidative burst killing in the phagolysosome (oxygen-dependent)
key enzyme is NADPH oxidase, which generates superoxide anion (O2-) that can then be processed into a variety of toxic chemicals
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)
caused by NADPH oxidase mutation; there is impaired oxidative burst
patients have recurrent Staph. infections
the life expectancy is much reduced
