Phagocytosis

  • phagosome fuses with lysosome that contains enzymes

  • this forms a phagolysosome

  • bacteria is killed

  • residue is released by exocytosis

Oxygen-independent microbial killing

  • mediated by a variety of factors

Oxidative burst killing in the phagolysosome (oxygen-dependent)

  • key enzyme is NADPH oxidase, which generates superoxide anion (O2-) that can then be processed into a variety of toxic chemicals

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD)

  • caused by NADPH oxidase mutation; there is impaired oxidative burst

  • patients have recurrent Staph. infections

  • the life expectancy is much reduced
