some are vector-borne (e.g. via insects)
zoonotic: animal reservoirs
person-to-person: some grow only in humans and have no other niche
some are part of normal flora

colonization or attachment
invasion
evasion of host defenses, a virulence mechanism
host damage
colonization
often a prelude to pathogenesis, but doesn’t always lead to disease. for example
20-40% carry Streptococcus pneumoniae
5-10% carry Neisseria meningiditis
