most common cause of thyroid pain
accounts for up to 5% of patients with clinical thyroid disease
usually, middle-aged women
viral infection or post-inflammatory process?
associated with a prior viral infection
inc. coxsackievirus, mumps, measles, adenovirus
usually hypothyroidism
may be preceded by a period of hyperthyroidism
pathology
rupture of follicles with inflammation
formation of granulomas
thyroid is enlarged 2-3x normal size
tissue injury does not seem to be self-perpetuating and is self-limited
granulomatous
you see multinucleate giant cells
