  • most common type of thyroiditis

  • most frequent cause of hypothyroidism where iodine levels are sufficient

  • usually occurs in middle-aged women, 45-65 years of age; female-male ratio is 10:1. “somebody up there is unfair in this respect”

  • chronic: may last for years

  • due to autoimmune injury to follicular cells affecting thyroid function

    • cell-mediated immunity

    • antibody-mediated immunity
