Describe the general properties of Bunyaviruses, and where do Hantaviruses fit in here?
Describe the conditions caused by Hantaviruses?
How is this virus transmitted, and how would you go about diagnosing it?
Bunyaviruses are 90-100nm in size, helical, enveloped, ss and –ve polarity. Hantaviruses are part of this class and can cause conditions such as: haemoharrgic fever with renal syndrome, adult respiratory distress syndrome, irreversible hypotension, and also mycardial depression. Transmission is via: contact with infected material (saliva, faeces, urine and tissues) of rodents, aerosols and transplacental. Diagnosis is via serological means.
