  1. What are the general properties of Pseudomonadaceae?

  2. What are the three main species of Psuedomonas?

  3. Name each one and their associated diseases?

Pseudomonadaceae are oxidase +ve, have a polar flagella, aerobes, produce exotoxins, psychotropic (grow in cold environments). The main species are: P. aeruginosa, B. mallei, B. pseudomallei. The disease associations are: P. aeruginosa – UTI’s, burns, septicaemia, abscesses, corneal infections, meningitis, subacutre endocarditis, infection in cystic fibrosis patients. Community acquired P. aeruoginosa is most susceptible to antibiotics, whilst nosocomially acquired infections are most resistant to such treatment. B.mallei: Humans may acquire infection from horses, infections based on skin lesions. B.P pseudomallei: meliodosis and localised suppurative diseases (ulcers, abscesses). Diabetes and alcoholism is associated with melioidosis.
