  • Chronic hepatitis is when hepatitis is prolonged for > 6 months with either: clinical, biochemical, or histological evidence. The causes include: 1) hepatitis viruses, 2) alcohol (see above), 3) drugs (methyldopa, methotrexate).
  • Microscopy: Chronic inflammatory cells such as lymphocytes, macrophages are found. Lymphoid aggregates are formed around portal veins in HCV. The hepatocytes under necrosis. Fibrous tissue is deposited around portal areas and eventually around lobules. HBV causes ground glass hepatocytes. Chronic hepatitis often leads to cirrhosis in patients with HCV (this is the most dangerous virus).
