Dental Aspects of Thyroid Therapy

on 9.6.06 with 0 comments

  1. Uncontrolled hypothyroidism leads to increase risk of CNS depressants (including benzodiazepines for conscious sedation)
  2. Excessive thyroid doses leads to increased anxiety and nervousness (don’t just blame these symptoms on the epi in your carp or dental phobia, etc… may be from thyroid tx)
  3. Increased risk of enhanced sympathomimetic drug effects (synergism). (* If pt is titrated to euthyroid levels, epi will not produce exaggerated effects. Only at levels above euthyroid levels does risk occur).
  4. Side effects: HTN; tachycardia; headache; thyroid storm (massive sympathetic response); tremors; insomnia; weight loss; sweating.
