- Uncontrolled hypothyroidism leads to increase risk of CNS depressants (including benzodiazepines for conscious sedation)
- Excessive thyroid doses leads to increased anxiety and nervousness (don’t just blame these symptoms on the epi in your carp or dental phobia, etc… may be from thyroid tx)
- Increased risk of enhanced sympathomimetic drug effects (synergism). (* If pt is titrated to euthyroid levels, epi will not produce exaggerated effects. Only at levels above euthyroid levels does risk occur).
- Side effects: HTN; tachycardia; headache; thyroid storm (massive sympathetic response); tremors; insomnia; weight loss; sweating.
