CAN WE USE AN NSAID IN CONJUCTION WITH WARFARIN?

on 6.2.09 with 0 comments

Risk of a bleeding ulcer:

  • Untreated pts: 2.1/1000 pt years
  • Anticoagulant use: 8.9/1000 pt years
  • NSAID alone: 8.3/1000 pt years
  • NSAID + anticoagulant: 26.3/ 1000 pt years (*** 13 TIMES THE RISK of GI bleeding compared to non drug users!!!)

Conclusion: “We would recommend that no NSAID be used in anticoagulated pts”

If a pt is taking Warfarin, low-dose (81mg) Aspirin may be safely used. For analgesics, use acetaminophen, tramadol or hydrocodones, etc instead of NSAIDs.
