The enormous revolution in molecular biology, which began in the second half of the 20th century has also had an impact on the study of various organisms that cause problems in tropical countries. Various initiatives have been launched to map the genetic material of eukaryotic parasites such as
Plasmodium falciparum, Schistosoma mansoni, Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma brucei, Leishmania major and
Brugia malayi. Various prokaryotes are also being intensively studied, from
Rickettsia prowazekii to
Salmonella typhi. It will be a considerable challenge to make effective use of the mass of information that becomes available.
