Malaria: Mixed infections

Mixed infections do occur, but for reasons which are unclear they are much less common than would be expected based on the prevalence of the individual species. Under-reporting may play a part, but this is probably a real phenomenon (partial cross-immunity to heterologous species?, biological interference?).
