  • this is mediated by bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria

  • in a lytic infection, the phage attaches itself to the bacterium, injects nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) into the bacterium, takes over the host cell’s transcription/translation machinery, duplicates its only genetic information, makes new phage particles, and packages DNA/RNA into phage particles. after lysis of the host cell, these new phage particles go and infect other bacteria
