secreted toxins can contribute to abnormalities in leukocyte function or systemic activation of the immune system
human host doesn’t make a protective immune response to S. aureus, but can produce antibodies that neutralize some of the toxins
because adults’ antibodies can neutralize toxins, adults don’t get the skull-to-skin syndrome that afflicts babies (they are susceptible because they have not really developed good humoral immunity)
Staph is already reasonably well phagocytosed. phagocytosis isn’t what keeps us from dealing with it effectively
