S. aureus: virulence determinants S. aureus: virulence determinants

  • secreted toxins can contribute to abnormalities in leukocyte function or systemic activation of the immune system

  • human host doesn’t make a protective immune response to S. aureus, but can produce antibodies that neutralize some of the toxins

  • because adults’ antibodies can neutralize toxins, adults don’t get the skull-to-skin syndrome that afflicts babies (they are susceptible because they have not really developed good humoral immunity)

  • Staph is already reasonably well phagocytosed. phagocytosis isn’t what keeps us from dealing with it effectively
