  • this is a phage-encoded exotoxin

  • it is probably not a major cause of virulence as was once commonly believed

  • in the test tube, it can be lethal to neutrophils and stimulate IL-8 release

  • however, if you clone the toxin or remove it, there is no loss or gain of virility

  • so the strains that have this toxin have accumulated a very slight evolutionary advantage

  • don’t invest in the company trying to neutralize that toxin
