this is a phage-encoded exotoxin
it is probably not a major cause of virulence as was once commonly believed
in the test tube, it can be lethal to neutrophils and stimulate IL-8 release
however, if you clone the toxin or remove it, there is no loss or gain of virility
so the strains that have this toxin have accumulated a very slight evolutionary advantage
don’t invest in the company trying to neutralize that toxin
