ductus arteriosus remains open after birth
90% are isolated defects
you hear a continuous “machinery” murmur that is loudest with the second heart sound
must be treated because left ventricular pressure is being forced on the pulmonary microvasculature
if this is superimposed on other conditions, the PDA might be beneficial, and oxygen administration may close the ductus and kill the baby
