receptor for HA is sialic acid
receptor-binding site is where virus binds sialic acid
HA genes and entire influenza viruses may be introduced via animals, e.g. fowl
some of these fowl are migratory and some are domestic
this is the origin of avian flu
why hasn’t this exploded into a pandemic?
although human influenza and avian flu use the same receptors, there are different distributions of subtype-specific receptors
human viruses like the 2,6-galactose receptor
viruses like another receptor
