Influenza A virus and hemagglutinin (HA)

  • receptor for HA is sialic acid

  • receptor-binding site is where virus binds sialic acid

HA genes and entire influenza viruses may be introduced via animals, e.g. fowl

  • some of these fowl are migratory and some are domestic

  • this is the origin of avian flu

  • why hasn’t this exploded into a pandemic?

  • although human influenza and avian flu use the same receptors, there are different distributions of subtype-specific receptors

    • human viruses like the 2,6-galactose receptor

    • viruses like another receptor
