Importance of microbial surface molecules

on 3.9.08 with 0 comments

  • the surface is important for attachment of the pathogen to the host

  • surface is a target of innate and adaptive immunity

  • consequently, many surface molecules are virulence factors—e.g. polysaccharide capsules of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Influenza

Microbial surface molecules

  • major targets of protective antibodies

  • targets of vaccines (e.g. Hemophilus influenzae type B)

  • specific antibodies against the surfaces of different isolates is the basis of serotype

    • Streptococcus pneumoniae: over 80 serotypes; 23 most common are included in the vaccine

    • Neisseria meningiditis: 13 serotypes; 4 are included in the vaccine
