Gram stain

on 3.9.08 with 0 comments

  • most useful test in the clinical microbiology laboratory

  • developed in the 19th century by Hans Gram

  • gives us shape and color

  • Gram-positive: purple

  • Gram-negative: red

  • this allows you to presumptively diagnose a patient’s infection directly from a clinical specimen without having to do a culture or PCR. Gram stain takes minutes, not hours (PCR) or days (culture)
