35,000 new CHD cases per year in USA
25% of cases with CHD have extracardiac abnormalities
etiology of CHD
usually not known, but this is changing quite rapidly
genetic abnormalities are increasingly recognized
environmental factors
maternal viral infections
maternal use of drugs
maternal diabetes mellitus
maternal chronic ethanol abuse
greatest impact is between 4th and 9th weeks of gestation
