incidence of congenital heart disease (CHD)

  • most common developmental defect

  • these days, many fetuses with congenital abnormalities are aborted prior to term

  • 8 per 1000 live births

  • 3% of neonates under 28 days of age have bicuspid aortic valves

  • 35,000 new CHD cases per year in USA

  • 25% of cases with CHD have extracardiac abnormalities


etiology of CHD

  • usually not known, but this is changing quite rapidly

  • genetic abnormalities are increasingly recognized

  • environmental factors

    • maternal viral infections

    • maternal use of drugs

    • maternal diabetes mellitus

    • maternal chronic ethanol abuse

  • greatest impact is between 4th and 9th weeks of gestation
