Cathelicidins

on 7.9.08 with 0 comments

  • mouse genetics are a powerful tool

  • it was discovered that frog mucus has small, cationic peptides that keep frog free from pond scum infection

  • these were also discovered in mammals and are now termed cathelicidins

  • fortunately for mice and humans, one cathelicidin dominates

  • these are produced by epithelial surfaces and granulocytes

  • in normal skin, there is almost no cathelicidin. if skin is injured, cathelicidins are produced

  • cathelicidin-knockout mice had difficulty controlling infection

  • the signature feature of many microbial pathogens is that they repel, pump out, degrade, bind, neutralize our natural antimicrobial peptides
