1. Narrow portion of subject on anode side
2. Thicker portion towards cathode side
3. Long focal film distance will minimize the anode heel affect.
4. Intensity of xray beam is non-uniform in the long axis of the tube.
5. Intensity variation due to non-uniformity = approx 30% (@ 40” ffd)
- Small focal spot produces a sharper image.
- The central portion of an object on the film is the “Umbra”
- A larger focal spot is used for patients who may move during xray procedure.
