7 steps in B cell maturation

on 25.9.08 with 0 comments

  • heavy chain D-J rearranging occurs first; then, a variable V chain is attached

  • μ chain is transiently expressed at surface as part of pre-B cell receptor; if this is okay, then light chains rearrange

  • so light-chain V-J rearranging occurs

  • IgM is then expressed on cell surface

  • finally, IgD and IgM are both produced with the aid of alternative splicing, and the cell is declared a mature B cell

  • big picture: rearrange heavy chains, rearrange light chains, make IgM, make IgD, leave bone marrow
