The articulation is between the distal ends of the tibia and fibula. This is a synovial plane joint, with very little movement occurring except the occasional medial and lateral rotation while flexing the ankle joint. The joint is reinforced by three ligaments, the interosseous ligament, anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments.
