definition: severe illness induces abnormal thyroid hormone values in the absence of thyroid disease
reverse T3 is elevated because of increased conversion; T3↓ and sometimes T4↓, too
clinically: no signs of hypothyroidism
treatment: no thyroid hormone replacement. don’t give thyroxin
