Definitions of wound healing

on 27.8.08 with 0 comments

  • first intention: healing of a clean surgical incision: no infection, no scar

  • second intention: no suturing. the wound heals by contraction, granulation tissue, and new epithelium

  • third intention: late suturing of granulation tissue

  • granulation tissue: a proliferation of capillaries, fibroblasts, inflammatory cells. you can’t tolerate a whole lot of granulation tissue on your eyelid or else it won’t work anymore, but you can tolerate more granulation tissue on your thigh, for example. it is a normal part of closing a tissue defect
