What determines the size of the infarct?

on 12.5.08 with 0 comments

  • How much O2 / Hb / cardiac output is reduced?

  • The artery (its size) involved?

  • The workload on the heart? (i.e.: MI superimposed by heart failure = greater size of infarct)

  • Development of collateral vessels or not? (i.e.: whether its rapid onset ischaemia or slow-onset ischaemia)

  • How many arteries are involved? (i.e.: ‘triple vessel disease’ – poor prognosis)
