Paroxysmal Disorders

  • In vasodepressor syncope, there is peripheral vasodilation to increase blood flow to the muscles, leading to blood pooling and a decrease in venous return and heart rate. This causes syncope.

  • When dealing with seizure disorders, it’s very important to get a good family history. There’s not always an obvious inheritance pattern with genetic epilepsies, so it’s often helpful to get a history from the grandparents of the patients if possible as well.

  • Blocking voltage dependent sodium channels at high firing frequencies is an effective way to block seizures since this interferes with “bursting” neurons, which are the likely drivers of epilepsy.
