Common Bile Duct Stones ( Choledocholithiasis)

  • 10-14 % of patients with GS have duct stones.

  • Duct stones are responsible for:


  1. Obstructive Jaundice:


    • Jaundice, dark urine, pale stool, pririts.

    • alk phos with min ALT

    •  bilirubin

    • USS = dilated bile ducts.

    • ERCP and cholecystectomy in future.


  1. Acute Cholangitis:


  • Organsims enter biliary tract via duodenum or blood via liver.

  • Western world = ductal stones and bacteria eg E.coli

  • Pacific rim = parasites: liver flukes and ascariasis.

  • In not treated fatal.
