Production of the aqueous humor is stimulated by ß1-adrenergic receptors. It leaves the anterior chamber through the trabecular meshwork and the Canal of Schlemm. Drugs that are used in glaucoma cause miosis and increase drainage through the trabecular meshwork.
Closed-angle results from a dilated iris (mydriasis)
Open-angle is chronic
Treatment:
Muscarinic agonists (pilocarpine, carbachol)
AchE inhibitors (physostigmine, echothiophate)
Epinephrine
α2-agonists (brimonidine and apraclonidine)
ß1-adrenergic antagonists (timolol) – most popular
Prostaglandin agonists
Acetazolamide (carbonic anhydrase inhibitor)
Cannabinoids (marijuana)
