Description and SymptomsComedones and inflammatory papules common in teenagers and young adults. Mostly distributed on the face, chest and back.
Diagnosis Clinical appearance.
PathologyObstructed hair follicle leading to inflammation. Many underlying factors: Propionobacter acnes infection, hormones, follicular cornification, sebum production.
Principles of Therapy
A plethora of agents available. Common topicals include benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics and retinoids. Systemic antibiotics (especially tetracycline derivatives) for more severe acne. Isotretinoin (AccutaneTM) is an excellent option for recalcitrant acne.
