Rationale for Antiplatelet therapy:

on 6.2.09 with 0 comments

Prevents platelet activation; decreases platelet aggregation; inhibits thromboxane A2 (the most powerful vasoconstrictor the body produces) synthesis (aspirin does this); prevents release of other platelet products that promote atherogenesis

Platelets also adhere to damaged epithelium. Also, if pts are on an artificial valve or prosthetic device, platelets tend to accumulate on these surfaces; many strategies of the antiplatelet drugs are to combat this effect.
