Goal of Lipid Lowering Drugs

Prevent myocardial infarction (M.I.’s are still the number one killer in the U.S.) and other atherosclerotic disorders such as stroke and peripheral vascular disease (common in the femoral artery; some patients will be unable to take a few steps without ischemia and pain in their leg due to occlusion of their large arteries in the leg—namely the femoral artery), prevent reinfarction (statins), and increase survival.

Approach: Prophylactic use to reduce formation of atherosclerotic plaque and subsequent narrowing of lumen in cardiac arteries.
