Know the etiologic agents, histology, and pathogenesis of Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis (SABE) glomerulonephritis

  • Etiologic Agents – most common

  • Staph aureus
  • Strep viridans
  • Histology

    • Light Microscopy - Focal proliferative GN often w/ necrosis and intracapillary thrombi to crescentic GN
    • Immuno Fluorescence - Granular deposits of IgG, IgM, and C3 in mesangial and subendothelial areas
    • Pathogenesis – Immune complex, NOT infectious emboli

What is shunt nephritis?

  • Syndrome similar to SABE seen in patients with ventriculoatrial shunts
